Our Curious George Literacy Pumpkin

It'a that time year again... FALL! Hayrides, corn mazes. Halloween... and literacy pumpkins. This year we chose to decorate our literacy pumpkin as Curious George. We used the book, "Follow That Hat!", as our inspiration, as well as my little stuffed Curious George. I borrowed the hat from my stuffed George to put over the pumpkin stem, and set the painted pumpkin on top of a glass container. I also lined the inside of the glass container with a piece of red paper that read, Curious George, in yellow letters (it was supposed to look like his shirt).

I think that it turned out really cute. My class loved it and they were so proud to have it on display in our school library. I must say, this is probably my most favorite pumpkin I have made with my classes so far... I mean, who doesn't love Curious George?

Learning Force & Motion with Punkin Chunkin

The class had so much fun continuing our unit on Force & Motion today with the help of the Science Channel's Punkin Chunkin show. There were some amazing "chunkin" moments, and the students could not believe that some of the pumpkins were traveling 650 miles per hour!

The students learned how gravity and force affect motion... and got see pumpkins flying through the air and "smash landing" at the same time! This was such a great way for the students to get to see how to use engineering with science. Hopefully this will get the students excited about making our own catapults next week!

"P" is for Pumpkin

We had SO much fun exploring and investigating... P U M P K I N S! For our literacy centers we listened to "Scaredy-Cat Splat!" by Rob Scotton at the listening station, we colored and read our "Pumpkin Happy" book, we wrote our pumpkin poem in our poetry journals, and we made the most adorable "My Pumpkin" hanging paper pumpkins! FUN!

Next, we got down & dirty... and totally slimy in science!! We had such a blast exploring and investigating the ooey-gooey inside pulpy guts of a pumpkin. I absolutely la-la-loved listening to my little kindergartners screaming "EEWWW!" and "That is so slimy!"... and not to mention all the laugh, laugh, laughing out loud!! It is quite possible that I had more fun then the students did!!
